A four week study of prison inmates has found that strange as it might seem, Dutch criminals are much less aggressive when exposed to the scent of oranges.
The whole concept of orange – or in the Dutch language ‘oranje’ (pronounced oran-yer) is fundamental to the Dutch psyche. From football to supermarket offers, the concept of orange – in particular the colour underlies the Dutch culture, and infuses this people with a powerful sense of belonging and pride. So maybe it’s more of a psychological thing than a physical reaction.
Personally speaking, another aspect of Dutch culture, the Grolsch Kanon extra-strong lager would have a more calming effect on me. At an alcoholic content of 11.6%, it induces a very soporific effect. And compared to some of the cheaper lighter-fuel competition, it tastes pretty good as well.
